A final assignment on recreating letterforms in an exhibition space. akta letter/one letter challenges the western technocratic ideas associated with the letterform “e”, by recontextualising it in its relationship to the letter “এ” in Bangla; letterforms that bear a striking visual and phonetic resemblance to each other. Drawing upon ideas of whakapapa and identity, I reference textile and typographic methods of Bengali culture, alternating texture, language and technique to generate reflexive, cross-cultural conversations. By using visual variation and sameness, I draw attention to alternative ways of seeing, central to the typographic agenda. As well as communicating language and culture, the art of the letterform is a diverse and evolving signifier of something more; else; other.
